Advises and coordinates all energy components of the local comprehensive plan. Studies and evaluates the economic and practical feasibility of operating a wind power generator on Town property and the installation of photovoltaic arrays on Town buildings. Our modern world depends on energy that has been harnessed by man so much so that energy usage is a critical issue for the economic and environmental health of our communities. Managing energy expenditures and monitoring changes in the energy industry present opportunities that can be used to improve the well-being of the Town of Yarmouth including its government, schools, businesses and residents. The Town’s Energy Committee - being aware of and working to support the Selectmen's annual goals - advises them on energy-related issues and recommends specific initiatives.
Increase the energy efficiency of the Town’s infrastructure.
Find opportunities for the Town to purchase energy at lower costs and promote development of local renewable energy sources thereby reducing the use of commercially-available electric power from the grid.
Inform Yarmouth residents, businesses and the D-Y Regional School District of opportunities to increase their energy efficiency and produce electricity on site through alternative methods.
The Town of Yarmouth spends over one million dollars a year for electric power. In order to save the taxpayers money and reduce the environmental impact considerable progress has been made. There are several locations which have solar panels owned by the town and one building with 1200 panels under a PPA agreement. This means that a company installs and maintains the panels with no cost to the town. In return the town receives a reduced electric power rate.
