From The DirectorMay is also one of my favorite months – warmer days and getting back to the water on the sailboat. It has been steadily busy at both libraries as we endured spring on Cape Cod. We have seen more and more families participating in our children’s programs, and people enjoying poetry in April at the Sunday Author event at South Yarmouth Library, along with a wrap-up of our Good Stories, Well Read series at West Yarmouth Library. We welcome Christine Kaufmann, new Head of Technical Services/IT Librarian, and bid farewell to our Mature Worker provided through Elder Services of Cape Cod, Richard Sentner. He will be missed. -Jane Cain Library Director

Annual Town Meeting Saturday, May 5, at the Mattacheese School Starting at 9 a.m.The Library has applied to the Yarmouth Community Preservation Committee for grant funding to collaborate with the towns of Barnstable and Dennis on digitizing the Register newspaper – Yarmouth’s weekly local newspaper since 1836, and the Barnstable Patriot, to complete the digitization of the run of that publication. The Patriot has been available in digital format through the Sturgis Library website for several years for the time period up to 1933. With approved funding, to be voted on at the May 5 Town Meeting, these two historical newspapers, covering news and cultural insight, through the history of Cape Cod and beyond, will be keyword-searchable from any computer in the world!

Staff Picks: "I Got it!" by David WiesnerDavid Wiesner brings his trademark artistry and rich imagination to the iconic American game of baseball. The few seconds after the ball leaves the bat can be infinitely long. For this eager young outfielder, there's plenty of time to envision the increasingly fantastic and funny situations that might interfere with making the catch. Summoning determination and courage, he overcomes the imaginary obstacles. I Got It! reveals the extraordinary within the ordinary, taking readers on an amazing journey in a few seconds on a baseball field. (Book description excerpted from Amazon.)
