Yarmouth Plastic Bag Ban Information

Beginning August 30, 2018, disposable plastic checkout bags will no longer be allowed in Yarmouth.

Why? To reduce the environmental impacts related to disposable
plastic bags and promote the use of reusable bags.

What environmental impacts? They are difficult to recycle, are made from nonrenewable resources,
add to roadside litter, and easily blow into the sea and become harmful to marine life.

What bags will be allowed at checkout? Reusable plastic and cloth bags, paper bags made of recycled
material and cardboard boxes.

Are there any plastic bags that are exempt? Yes. Those used for newspaper delivery, for covering
clothing, and for packaging items bought in bulk, such as vegetables and fruit, and those used
to wrap frozen or damp items such as meat or fish.
